No 'I' in 'Team': The Power of Collective Success

In sports, business, and any collaborative effort, the phrase “There’s no ‘I’ in ‘team'” emphasizes the importance of working together. It underscores a fundamental.

 The Essence of Teamwork

Teamwork involves a group working towards a common goal. Each member contributes unique skills and perspectives, enriching the group’s potential. The strength of a team lies not in individual brilliance but in effective collaboration.

Benefits of Teamwork

1. Diverse Perspectives: Teams bring together different backgrounds and viewpoints, leading to innovative solutions and better decision-making.
2. Shared Workload: Distributing tasks makes the workload manageable, reducing stress and preventing burnout.
3. Enhanced Learning: Team members learn from each other, acquiring new skills and knowledge.
4. Increased Motivation: Support and encouragement from team members boost morale and inspire excellence.

“There’s no ‘I’ in ‘team'” reminds us that success is a collective effort. By embracing teamwork principles, we can achieve greater results, foster a supportive environment, and create a fulfilling collaborative experience. It’s not about individual glory but coming together to achieve something remarkable.

Does Your Child Needs Social Skills & to Feel Confident in Groups?

We see children everywhere, all the time. They are all cute and adorable, but you will agree that there are some things that set them apart from other children and make them more likeable than others. The most noticeable of which is the child’s social skills. Let’s admit it; well-behaved kids are a joy to be with. I’ll willingly babysit them for free anytime!

While some parents are lucky to be able to raise kids with well developed social skills easily and on their own, most of us actually need help. Okay, a lot of help, to be honest. Luckily, countless number of parents will attest to Martial Arts as an effective (and fun!) way to supplement the developmental learning of children. They not only learn a sport and keep fit, but they also learn how to conduct themselves in an appropriate manner even in different situations.

Martial Arts Encourages Social Interaction

Though competitions are one on one, Martial Arts is also a team sport. Children train together, and they also learn to watch out for each other, making new friends in the process. They often engage in healthy competitions wherein they challenge AND encourage each other. During each class, they receive feedback from their teachers and communicate with others on how to improve. They are also able to interact with children in their class who are younger or older than they are. The children are then given more chances to identify cues on how to behave in social settings and relationships.

There are children who have difficulty keeping friends because they can’t seem to control their emotions. They start fights and would rather be alone when they are angry or frustrated. With the help of Martial Arts, children with disruptive habits will learn how to control outbursts, and as a result, it will be easier for them to maintain good relationships and develop new ones.

Martial Arts Teaches Respect

One of the first and most important things a student learns in Martial Arts is respect, and this is a non-negotiable. From day one they are taught to bow upon entering the training floor and to their teacher as a sign of respect. They are also taught to bow to their classmates and even their competitors before a fight.

Martial Arts Teaches Courtesy

Martial Arts beginners often start with a clean slate, no skills at all. They know a little about the sport from competitions they may have seen online or on TV. They start off with a white belt and work their way up to black. Those who have already leveled up often share their knowledge on to the beginners as a courtesy, paying it forward just as others have done so before them.

Martial Arts Teaches Self-Esteem and Self-Confidence

The most common reason one fails to achieve his or her full potential is because we do not believe in our capabilities enough. Oftentimes, we are scared to even try out new things for fear of failing. That is why self-esteem and self-confidence are very important.

In Martial Arts, the teachers are constantly encouraging their students to take on different challenges while helping them overcome each one. They learn not to limit themselves by stepping out of their comfort zones. Teachers acknowledging every effort no matter how small and the children begin to feel good about themselves. They learn that they are capable of achieving things as long as they try. It is a good and healthy way of building up the children’s self-esteem and self-confidence.

When they take Martial Arts classes, children learn a sport, keep fit, have fun and are kept away from gadgets for an hour or so. More than that, the social skills that children learn are priceless. In just a few weeks you will notice the positive changes in your children’s behaviour, and you will also notice that they are happier individuals. It will be worth all the trips to the dojo and all the waiting time you had to go through. Martial Arts classes are an investment you certainly will not regret making.

Harry and Friends is a program for all our young students to help reinforce the life lessons we talk about every day. The program gives us a lot of highly effective tools to help instil positive character development in our youngest students including animations, visual aids and colouring sheets!

The main character “Harry” will serve as a positive role model to all our 3-6 years old in not only teaching them abstract concepts like self discipline and respect, but demonstrating real life behaviours like cleaning their room and saying “yes mum” and “no mum”. This example will help them really work on internalising those behaviours themselves.

“Harry and Friends” mat chat series for the Little Ninja program also has a game that can be downloaded from the Apple app store – click the image (top right) to install.

Stripe Testing

Stripe Testing Week – is the last week of each month and classes will follow a testing style format.

During stripe testing week Instructors test students on specific skills.
If students can perform the skill correctly and with intensity, they earn their stripe. Students must earn 3 different coloured skill stripes to be eligible to attend a Grading Test.

If a student is unsuccessful in obtaining their stripe in a particular month,  there is an opportunity just before the grading test to retest for their stripes. So the secret to keeping up-to-date with the curriculum and passing the stripe testing is that you need to practice at home.

Grading Tests

Grading tests are special ceremonies where students are tested for their next belt rank. They are a little different from stripe testing.

At a Grading Test, Senior Instructors test students for their next belt rank
They are assessing the skills learned for the previous 3 month term as well as students’ intensity, courage, resilience and black belt attitude.

Since you have just started your martial arts journey, your instructor will let you know in class whether you’ll be ready for this test or whether you should focus on the next test in 3 months time. If you are unsure, your should see your Instructor for feedback.

Here are 10 tips for a successful belt examination:
1. Train with diligence

2. Get to know your grading requirements

3. Train with different partners

4. Always train with a martial arts spirit

5. Ask your instructors what to work on

6. On the day of grading… be prepared

7. Stay focused, Stay alert!

8. Give your best and stay humble

9. Show your martial arts, according to your level

10. Don’t rush and don’t give up!
